When Can I Start My Distance Calculus Course?

Immediately

You begin your Distance Calculus course typically the same day you submit the Enrollment Application, or the next business day if you submit outside business hours. There is no waiting for a "term start date" - we operate on revolving enrollment year-round.

What Does "Start a Distance Calculus Course" Actually Mean?

"Starting" the course is a sequence of small steps that happen quickly:

  1. Submit your Enrollment Application. The course professor reviews and approves it.
  2. You receive Getting Started emails with the initial tasks: contact the professor by email and Skype text chat, install the course software (LiveMath or Mathematica), purchase the software license and e-textbook, and set up your screen-recording account.
  3. You log into the course portal using credentials we send you, and the first set of assignments is waiting for you.
  4. You begin the first module. From this moment forward, you have 1 year to complete the course - though most students finish far sooner.

You do not need to wait for any "Start of Term Date" to start working. Your transcript will be placed into the appropriate academic semester (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer) based on the date you submit the enrollment application, but that is a Registrar-side detail that does not affect when your coursework actually begins.

POSITIVES:
One of the best math classes I have ever taken. The lessons made the failures of my previous professors very apparent. In a few short minutes, things that I used to struggle with just clicked. This professor is top notch and really wants you to understand how to use the material.
NEGATIVES:
The SOFTWARE is extremely frustrating. Even after taking the time to learn, there are countless glitches. You learn to work around them, and overall, the software makes the math convenient, but its failures are sorely felt throughout the course. Make sure you save often as it crashes regularly, especially with graphs.
The assignments are easy enough but some of them don't line up with the taught material. Be prepared to do some of your own independent research to get a deeper understanding of why things are the way they are.

Courses Completed: Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra
After a really rough first year of calculus, I completed all of the second year calculus courses with Distance Calculus. It was like night and day the difference. My first year was so boring and monotonous. Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra through Distance Calculus were just so much different - so not boring at all. I thoroughly enjoyed these courses. So engaging.

The courses were excellent. Very flexible and engaging and the platform offers a lot of upper-level courses. Dr. Curtis is an outstanding professor and very responsive. I would take again.

After two failed attempts at my university, this course helped me understand Calculus. The live maths tool along with Dr. Curtis were especially helpful, allowing me to visualize concepts and expand my understanding. The explanations were clear, the examples practical, and I could learn at my own pace, which built my confidence. Thank you.
