Introductory Statistics - Data Science - Distance Calculus Information from Distance Calculus

Introductory Statistics can best be described as a "a cross between a mathematician/statistician and a programmer ".

This topic has many names, all being equivalent:
  • Introductory Statistics
  • Elementary Statistics
  • Baby Stats
  • Basic Statistics

Distance Calculus @ Roger Williams University can help prepare you for a study of Data Science-related fields - which today includes MBA, Economics, Business, and related fields.

If you wish to understand the fields that are touched by Data Science, you will need to understand the basics of the language of statistics and probability.

If you are planning for a career in Data Science, you will need to look towards the higher courses above our Basic Statistics - Math 124 course. You will NEED a very strong mathematics background that includes ALL of the following courses:

Courses Completed: Calculus II
I took Calculus II through Distance Calculus and can't recommend it enough. Being able to take the course at my own pace while I was working full time was tremendously helpful, especially since I hadn't taken a math course for 5 years prior. The instruction was excellent and the software they used to teach the course was intuitive and facilitated the learning process very well. This calc II class enabled me to take multivariable calc, linear algebra, and real analysis at Harvard University's extension school, which ultimately qualified me for the economics PhD program that I will graduate from next year. 8 years on, I'm still grateful to Professor Curtis and Distance Calculus.

Courses Completed: Calculus I
This course provided an excellent chance to learn about Calculus...again. I took calculus in high school, but I learned so much more with this course!
It does take a good amount of time to do all the lessons, so definitely keep on top of them, but all the exercises helped me to really understand the material. And the nice thing is you can do it on your own time at home.

Courses Completed: Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory
I've taken Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Probability Theory through Distance Calculus. All four courses were awesome. Dr. Curtis and the TA's were very responsive and helpful.
The biggest advantage of these courses, compared to taking a traditional course, is that in addition to the theory, I was forced to also think computationally. I have become quite adept at using LiveMath and Mathematica for doing calculations and plots.
All of the courses were accepted for credit transfer (Johns Hopkins University)

Courses Completed: Precalculus, Calculus I
The courses were excellent. Very flexible and engaging and the platform offers a lot of upper-level courses. Dr. Curtis is an outstanding professor and very responsive. I would take again.

Courses Completed: Calculus I
After two failed attempts at my university, this course helped me understand Calculus. The live maths tool along with Dr. Curtis were especially helpful, allowing me to visualize concepts and expand my understanding. The explanations were clear, the examples practical, and I could learn at my own pace, which built my confidence. Thank you.
